Osnovna definicija  klipinga bi se lahko glasila nekako takole: gre za izrezovanje člankov iz tiskanih publikacij. Danes ne moremo več razpravljati v tem kontekstu, zato raje govorimo o spremljanju medijev, saj že dolgo več ne gre samo za izrezovanje časopisnih člankov.

However, today, clipping can no longer be discussed in this context, therefore it is preferred to speak of monitoring the media, as clipping newspaper articles stopped being the only activity within clipping long time ago.

Spremljanje medijev je torej beseda, ki je uporabna v današnjem času in obsega pošiljanje dokumentiranih datotek, analiz ali kopij medijskih vsebin v interesu naročnika.

Na področju klipinga se je iz potreb združevanja in organiziranosti kliping organizacij, leta 1953 ustanovila profesionalna agencija FIBEB, Federeation Internationale des Bereaux d’Extraits de Presse, ki je tudi najvplivnejša tovrstna organizacija. Danes FIBEP združuje 92 članic v 43 državah sveta.

For this reason, the expression preferred to be used today is “media monitoring” as this term comprises the sending of documented files, analyses and copies of media contents in line with the client’s interest.

Due to requirements in associating and organising the clipping organisation, a professional agency called FIBEP (Federation Internationale des Bureaux d’Extraits de Presse) was founded in 1953, which is the most influential organisation of this type.
